Ivanov, Arkadii Aleksandrovich 

Born Nov 6 (19), 1902, in Kainsk, present-day Kuibyshev, Novosibirsk Oblast; died July 20, 1956, in Sverdlovsk. Soviet geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953). Member of the CPSU from 1942.

Upon graduating from the Tomsk Technological Institute in 1926, Ivanov worked in the Urals. In 1944 he became director of the Mining and Geological Institute of the Urals Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Sverdlovsk. His main works were devoted to the mineralogy, geochemistry, and petrology of deposits of gold, platinum, and rare metals. He proposed a theory of the origin of veins and discovered a new type of primary deposit of niobium and iridosmine. Ivanov was awarded two orders and various medals.
