Arkadii Aleksandrovich Rylov

    0.01 sec.
Rylov, Arkadii Aleksandrovich

Born Jan. 17 (29), 1870, in Istobenskoe, present-day Istobensk, Kirov Oblast; died June 22, 1939, in Leningrad. Soviet painter. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1935).

Rylov studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under A. I. Kuindzhi. He was a member of the World of Art (Mir Is-kusstva), the Union of Russian Artists, and the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR). Primarily a landscape painter, Rylov sought to convey a generalized, romantic, typically Russian image of his native land. His works are characterized by rich, vibrant colors and positive imagery. Examples include The Whisper of Green Leaves (1904, Tret’iakov Gallery, Moscow; Russian Museum, Leningrad) and In Blue Space (1918, Tret’iakov Gallery). During the Soviet period, Rylov often depicted people at work altering their natural environment (Tractor at a Logging Site, 1934, Tret’iakov Gallery) and re-created scenes from revolutionary history (Lenin in Razliv, 1934, Russian Museum).
