Arkhangel’skii, Aleksandr Andreevich
Born Oct. 11(23), 1846, in Penza; died Nov. 16, 1924, in Prague. Russian choral director and composer. Honored Artist of the Republic (1921). In 1880, Arkhangel’skii organized a mixed choir in St. Petersburg. It had an extensive repertoire (including arrangements of folk songs, choral classics, and works of contemporary composers) and was of a high musical quality. This choir made concert tours through the cities of Russia and performed abroad. Arkhangel’skii published the choral collection A Repertoire of Concerts and wrote choral works and arrangements of folk songs. He was one of the first to introduce the female voice into Russian church singing. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
