Established 1801 as Alexandria County of the Dist. of Columbia; in 1846 county was returned to VA; renamed March 16, 1920. Arlington functions politically as a county in VA. Name Origin: For the home of George Washington Parke Custis (1781-1857), grandson of Martha Washington (1732-1802), named for the 1st Earl of Arlington, Henry Bennet (1618-85) who shared Charles II's (1630-85) grant of the colony of VA. It was later the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee (1807-70). Area (sq mi): 25.96 (land 25.87; water 0.09). Pop per sq mi: 7575.00. Pop 2005: 195,965. State rank: 9. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.40%; 1990-2000 10.80%. Pop 2000: 189,453 (White 60.40%; Black or African American 9.30%; Hispanic or Latino 18.60%; Asian 8.60%; Other 13.00%). Foreign born: 27.80%. Median age: 34.00. Income 2000: per capita $37,706; median household $63,001; Pop below poverty level: 7.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $49,555-$56,888. Unemployment 2004: 2.60%.
