Arnall, Ellis (Gibbs) (1907–92) governor; born in Newnan, Ga. A lawyer and Democratic Georgia assemblyman, elected Speaker (1933–37), he became Georgia's attorney general (1939–43). A progressive governor (Dem., 1943–47), he ended prison chain gangs, abolished the poll tax, and restored accreditation of the state university. Founding an Atlanta law firm afterward, he served as President Truman's director of the Office of Price Stabilization in 1952.
