Arnol’d, Fedor Karlovich 

Born Dec. 5 (17), 1819, in St Petersburg; died Feb. 23 (Mar. 7), 1902. Russian forester.

Arnol’d was educated at the Forestry Institute in St. Petersburg. From 1845 to 1857 he worked in the Department of Forestry. In 1857 he became a professor at the Forestry Institute, and in 1866 a professor at the Agricultural Institute in St. Petersburg. From 1876 to 1883 he was director of the Petrov Agricultural and Forestry Academy (now the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy). His principal works deal with the history of forestry and forest valuation; he also wrote specialized textbooks on forestry and other works. Arnol’d’s Russian Forest (vols. 1–3, 2nd ed., 1893–99) is a basic summary of scientific information about forests and forestry in Russia.
