Arnshtein, Karl Avgustovich 

Born Mar. 17 (29), 1840, in Moscow; died 1919. Russian histologist; founder of the Kazan school of Neurohistologists.

Arnshtein graduated from the University of Dorpat (Tartu) in 1864. There he defended his dissertation on migratory and goblet intestinal cells in 1867. Beginning in 1869 he was at the University of Kazan, where he was chairman of the subdepartment of histology from 1872 to 1903. The main works of Arnshtein and his numerous students on the histology of the nervous system, including studies on peripheral nerve endings, formed the basis of neurohistology in the USSR.
