Aron Sheftelevich Gurshtein

Gurshtein, Aron Sheftelevich 

Born Sept. 20 (Oct. 2), 1895, in Krolevets, in present-day Sumy Oblast; died 1941. Soviet literary critic.

Gurshtein began publishing his works in 1912. He studied at Petrograd University. He volunteered for the Red Army in 1920. Gurshtein took part in the Great Patriotic War (1941–45) and was killed in the battle of Moscow. He wrote about European literature and theater in Hebrew and Russian: about the works of D. Bergel’son and E. Fininberg, the poetry of S. Galkin, the acting mastery of S. Mikhoels and V. Zuskin, and about A. Gol’dfaden. His works include Sholom Aleichem (1939), Issues of Marxist Literary Criticism (1931). and Problems of Socialist Realism (1941).
