In northern ME, bordered on west and northwest by Quebec, Canada, and on the northeast and east by New Brunswick, Canada. Organized Mar 16, 1839 from Washington and Penobscot counties. Name Origin: For the Aroostook River, which runs through the county; from Micmac Indian 'clear river.'
