Arsenii Andreevich Zakrevskii

Zakrevskii, Arsenii Andreevich 

Born Sept. 13 (24), 1783, in Zubtsov District, in what is now Kalinin Oblast; died Jan 11 (23), 1865, in Florence. Count; Russian military and governmental leader; general of the infantry (1829), adjutant general (1848).

Zakrevskii participated in actions of the Russian army from 1805 to 1814 and was appointed governor-general of Finland in 1823. In 1826 he was a member of the supreme criminal court hearing the Decembrist case. While minister of internal affairs (1828–31), he used troops to suppress uprisings caused by the cholera epidemic of 1831. In 1848 he was appointed military governor-general of Moscow. A reactionary petty tyrant and martinet, Zakrevskii symbolized the rule of Nicholas I. In 1859 he was removed from his post.
