Arshinov, Vladimir Vasil’evich
Born July 3 (15), 1879, in Moscow; died Aug. 7, 1955, in Leningrad. Soviet geologist. Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1941); professor (1945). Taught in the Moscow Mining Academy and the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute (1919–33). Arshinov was one of the founders of the Litogea Institute, which was later renamed the All-Union Institute of Mineral Resources (VIMS), and was its scientific director (1915–55). He studied nonmetallic and metallic minerals, questions of technical petrography, methods of beneficiating minerals and low-grade ores, and the use of various industrial waste products.
