Artamonov, Mikhail Illarionovich
Born Nov. 23 (Dec. 5), 1898, in the village of Vygolevo, Ves’egonsk District, Tver’ Province. Soviet archaeologist and historian. Member of the CPSU since 1940. Doctor of historical sciences (1941); member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1960); professor (1935) and director of the Subdepartment of archaeology (1949) at Leningrad University. From 1951 to 1964, Artamonov was director of the State Hermitage. He has conducted research on a number of Bronze Age and Iron Age remains in the Don region, the Northern Caucasus, and the Ukraine. His basic works are devoted to the archaeology and history of the Scythians, Khazars, and early Slavs. Artamonov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
