Artsikhovskii, Artemii Vladimirovich
Born Dec. 13 (26), 1902, in St. Petersburg. Soviet archaeologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1960). Member of the CPSU after 1960. Artsikhovskii became professor (in 1937) and chairman (in 1939) of the archaeology subdepartment of Moscow University. He is a major figure in the field of Slavic and Russian archaeology. He has written basic works on the antiquities of Novgorod and Moscow. For more than 30 years, he directed the digs at Novgorod, where the beresto (birch-bark) writings of the llth-15th centuries were found.
