Artemovsk

Artemovsk (ərtyô`məfsk), Ukr. Artemivsk, city (1989 pop. 90,000), in Ukraine. An industrial center of the Donets Basin, it produces metals, mining equipment, glass, bricks, and chemicals. Nearby are salt and dolomite deposits that are utilized in the Donets iron and steel and chemical industries.
Artemovsk 

(until 1924, Bakhmut), a city which is the center of Artemovsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. It is situated on the Bakhmut River in the Don basin. Artemovsk is a railroad junction with 80,400 inhabitants (1968). It is a major center of rock salt extraction (43 percent of the output of the USSR), as well as the extraction and production of building materials (plaster, chalk, and fireclays). There are plants in the city for the refining of nonferrous metals, the production of mining machinery and equipment, mechanical repairs, and the production of building ceramics, fireclay, glass, alabaster, and so forth. The food industry is highly developed and includes a meat plant, liqueur and champagne plants, and a dairy. Light industry includes the manufacture of shoes and sewing goods. The All-Union Scientific Institute for the Salt Industry, the general technical department of the Ukrainian Polytechnic Correspondence Institute, the Ukrainian Geological Museum, industrial and railroad transport technicums, and various pedagogical, medical, and music schools are located in Artemovsk. Artemovsk has been well-known since 1571. It became a district town in 1783. With the beginning of rock salt mining in Artemovsk (the 1880’s), Russia stopped her imports of this commodity from abroad. The city was renamed in honor of Artem (F. A. Sergeev).


Artemovsk 

a city (until 1961, a settlement) in Pereval’sk Raion, Voroshilovgrad Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, 2 km from the Kipuchaia railroad station (on the Debal’tsevo-Lugansk line). In 1969 it had a population of 17,000. Coal is mined in Artemovsk, and the city has a palace of culture.


Artemovsk 

a city in Kuragino Raion, Krasnoiarsk Krai, RSFSR. Located on the southwestern slopes of the Eastern Saian, 15 km from the Koshurnikovo railroad station (on the Abakan-Taishet line). Population, 11,000 (1967). In 1911, Artemovsk developed from the Ol’khovskii mine in connection with the beginning of gold mining. In 1939 it was transformed into a city. There is an ore-concentration factory where copper and silver are extracted in addition to gold.
