Artin, Emil (1898–1962) mathematician; born in Hamburg, Germany. After emigrating (1937), he taught at the University of Indiana (1938–1946) and Princeton (1946–58), returning to the University of Hamburg (1958). He is best known for work in higher algebra, including the L-series functions, class field theory and hypercomplex numbers. In his spare time he enjoyed astronomy, biology, and old music.
