Artsybushev, Vasilii Petrovich 

Born 1857 in Kursk Province; died May 2 (15), 1917, in Ufa. Figure in the revolutionary movement in Russia. Born into the family of a landowner.

Artsybushev joined the revolutionary movement in the 1870’s; he was first a populist, then a Social Democrat. He was one of the organizers of the revolutionary newspaper Molodaia Rossiia. He was active in revolutionary work in Kursk, Orel, Krasnoiarsk, Eniseisk, and St. Petersburg. Artsybushev was subjected to reprisals. In January 1902 in Samara, he participated in the all-Russian conference of Iskra supporters; he was a member of the bureau of the Russian organization of Iskra. He was a founder and member of the Samara committee of the RSDLP and a member of the eastern bureau of the Central Committee of the RSDLP. In 1905 he continued party work in Ufa and Samara; he was attacked by the Black Hundreds. In 1908 he was elected a delegate to the Fifth All-Russian Conference of the Bolsheviks, but he was arrested on his way to the conference. Artsybushev died of typhus.
