Artem (ərtyôm`), city (1989 pop. 69,000), Maritime Territory (Primorsky Kray), Russian Far East. It is a coal-mining center and has an important thermoelectric station that utilizes local coal deposits.

Artem 

a city in the Maritime (Primorskii) Krai of the RSFSR. Located in the northern part of the Murav’ev-Amur Peninsula, on the territory of the Artem lignite basin.

Artem’s railroad station (Ozernye Kliuchi) is 45 km northeast of Vladivostok. The population is 65,000 (1969; 35,000 in 1939). The extraction and dressing of brown coal takes place here. The city is the site of a piano factory, carpet and furniture factories, a china plant, enterprises producing construction materials, and electromechanical shops. Artem has an evening division of the Far East Polytechnic Institute, an evening technical school for mining construction and one for industrial training. There is a large state regional electric power plant near Artem (in the settlement of Artemovskii). Artem was founded in 1924 as a mining settlement. It became a city in 1938. It was named in honor of Artem (F. A. Sergeev).
