Asahi Shimbun
(Morning-Sun), a Japanese newspaper concern. It was founded in Osaka in 1879 by Murayama Ryuhei (1850–1933). Later it established divisions in Tokyo (1888), Kitakyushu and Nagoya (1935), and Sapporo (1959). Its administration is located in Tokyo. In 1967 the concern had about 7,500 workers; it had 179 correspondence points within the country and 12 abroad. In addition to the daily newspapers Asahi Shimbun and Asahi Evening News, the concern publishes the weeklies Shukan Asahi and Asahigurafu; the monthlies Fujin Asahi, Kagaku Asahi, Nogyo Asahi, and Asahi kamera; the yearbook Asahi nenkan; and books and pamphlets. Asahi Shimbun (Morning Sun), one of the largest Japanese bourgeois newspapers. It has been published by the Asahi Shimbun concern in Osaka since 1879 and Tokyo since 1888. Presently it is also published in the cities of Nagoya, Kitakyushu, and Sapporo. The circulation of the morning and evening editions is about 8 million copies (1968). Japan's Asahi newspaper had cited unidentified sources close to the DPRK as saying Kim Jong-un met President Hu Jintao and other Chinese leaders after flying to Beijing around June 10.
