ascender

The part of lowercase b, d, f, h, k, l, and t, that extends above the body of the letters. See typeface.


ascender [ə′sen·dər]
(graphic arts)
That part of some lowercase letters which extends above the main body, as in b, d, and h.

(text)ascender - A lowercase letter that extends above the "x-height" (the height of the letter "x"), such as "d", "t", or "h". Also used to denote the part of the letter extending above the x-height.

He says to include a balance of ascenders (letters like t, k, h, etc.
