In eastern LA, southeast of Baton Rouge; organized Mar 31, 1807 (prior to statehood) from Acadia Parish. Name Origin: For the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ usually observed by Christians of the fortieth day after Easter.

Area (sq mi): 302.88 (land 291.53; water 11.35). Pop per sq mi: 310.40.
Pop 2005: 90,501. State rank: 15. Pop change: 2000-20005 18.10%; 1990-2000 31.60%. Pop 2000: 76,627 (White 76.20%; Black or African American 20.30%; Hispanic or Latino 2.50%; Asian 0.30%; Other 2.00%). Foreign born: 1.80%. Median age: 32.00.
Income 2000: per capita $17,858; median household $44,288; Pop below poverty level: 12.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,788-$26,441.
Unemployment 2004: 6.30%. Change from 2000: -0.20%. Median travel time to work: 26.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 48.60%.

Post the Hurricane Katrina, Baton Rouge native residents are seen to be moving to the outlying parishes of Livingston Parish and Ascension Parish and it has been noted that this area is designated with one of the fasted declining population rates according to the US Census report of 2007-2008.
From 1982 to 1989, he was appointed pastor of Ascension Parish in Worcester and, in 1989, he became the pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Clinton and served there until his retirement in 2006.
Meanwhile, Ascension Parish officials are welcoming the partnership as an economic development tool, Welch said.
