Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park Location: 6 miles north of US 20, between Orchard and Royal. Facilities: Interpretive facilities, including visitor center and rhino barn, fossil preparation laboratory, restrooms, picnic facilities, trail. Activities: Interpretive and educational programs. Special Features: Nearly 12 million years ago, volcanic ash engulfed this ancient watering hole, entombing numerous prehistoric animals. A 2,000-square-foot "Rhino Barn" protects part of the deposit, where skeletons are unearthed and displayed exactly where they're found. Site is operated jointly by the University of Nebraska State Museum and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
