Ashgabat (əshkhəbät`), formerly Ashkhabad, city (1991 pop. 412,200), capital of Turkmenistan, near the border with Iran, on the Trans-Caspian RR. The city has textile, motion picture, and crafts industries. Ashgabat was founded in 1881 as a fortress. From 1919 to 1927 it was named Poltoratsk. An earthquake in 1948 virtually destroyed the city, which stands in a major fault zone. The southern section of the city has been extensively developed since the 1990s. The Turkmenistan Academy of Sciences is in Ashgabat. Ashgabatformerly AshkhabadCity (pop., 2002 est.: 743,000), capital of Turkmenistan. It lies in an oasis at the northern foot of the Kopet-Dag Range near the Iranian border. Founded in 1881 as a Russian military fort, it was the capital of Turkmenistan S.S.R. (1924–90). A violent earthquake destroyed the city in 1948; it was rebuilt on the same plan. It is now an industrial, transportation, and cultural centre. Ashkhabad, Ashgabat the capital of Turkmenistan. In addition, the Council welcomed the convening by the Secretary-General of a meeting of concerned countries on 16 April, following an earlier meeting held in New York on 18 November 1996, and the convening of an International Forum on Assistance to Afghanistan on 21 and 22 January at Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, and the meeting of the Afghanistan Support Group on 21 April in Geneva. The details of the announcement were made at the 5th Turkmenistan International Oil and Gas Conference (TIOGE) which was officially opened in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, by His Excellency Saparmurat Niyazov, President of Turkmenistan, with a Welcome Address delivered by Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Also, by calling upon the two sides to cooperate fully with the Secretary-General's Special Envoy, Ramiro Piriz-Ballon, the Council stressed the need for them to take the opportunity of the continual round of inter-Tajik talks in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, which had begun on 30 November, to reach a general agreement that would restore peace and national accord in Tajikistan. |
