In north-central OH, southwest of Akron; organized Feb 24, 1846 from the counties of Huron (Ruggles twp), Lorain (Sullivan and Trop twps), Richland (Vermillion, Montgomery, Orange, Green, Hanover, and parts of Monroe, Mifflin, and Clear Fork twps), and Wayne (Jackson, Perry, Mohican, and Lake twps). Name Origin: Named in 1822 for the home of Henry Clay (1777-1852) at Lexington, KY.

Area (sq mi): 426.85 (land 424.37; water 2.47). Pop per sq mi: 127.50.
Pop 2005: 54,123. State rank: 46. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.00%; 1990-2000 10.60%. Pop 2000: 52,523 (White 97.10%; Black or African American 0.80%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.50%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 1.10%. Median age: 36.30.
Income 2000: per capita $17,308; median household $39,179; Pop below poverty level: 9.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,358-$23,315.
Unemployment 2004: 6.80%. Change from 2000: 2.20%. Median travel time to work: 20.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 32.20%.

    On central northern border of WI, bordered on north by Lake Superior; organized Mar 27, 1860 from unorganized territory. Name Origin: For the abundant ash trees, probably Fraxinus americana, or for the KY home of Henry Clay (1777-1852), U.S. senator known as the "Great Pacificator" for his advocacy of compromise to avert national crises.
