Name Origin: For the Ashtabula River, which runs through the northeastern part of the county; from an Algonquian name thought to mean 'fish river' or 'there are always enough moving,' possibly referring to the fish. Area (sq mi): 1368.47 (land 702.44; water 666.03). Pop per sq mi: 146.90. Pop 2005: 103,221. State rank: 27. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.50%; 1990-2000 2.90%. Pop 2000: 102,728 (White 92.90%; Black or African American 3.20%; Hispanic or Latino 2.20%; Asian 0.30%; Other 2.50%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 37.60.
