Ashug Alesker, Alimamed Ogly
Born in 1821, in Agkilisa; died there in 1926. Azerbaijani folk poet-improviser (ashug). Ashug Alesker created ashug melodies to his verses and masterfully performed them on the saz (a stringed musical instrument); he was also a storyteller. The repertoire of Ashug Alesker encompassed dozens of classical dastans and ashug melodies. His intimate lyrics are popular even today. The themes of Ashug Alesker’s poems include the difficult lot of those who labor, the revolutionary events of 1905, realistic scenes of peasant life, and the beauty of nature. Ashug Alesker headed the ashug school. Ia. P. Polonskii was enthusiastic about his songs. WORKS[Äsärläri.] Baku, 1963.In Russian translation: Antologiia azerbaidzhanskoi poezii, vol. 1. Moscow, 1960.
