asperges

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia 0.18 sec.
asperges (əspûr`jəs), ceremonial sprinkling of the people with holy water by the priest before the Sunday High Mass in the Roman Catholic Church. The accompanying antiphon begins, Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo et mundabor [Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, O Lord, and I shall be cleansed]. At Easter time the antiphon is different, beginning, Vidi aquam [I saw water]; this is based on Ezek. 47.2.

I liked their brief chanting of the Asperges me during the opening sprinkling rite.
Those before the readings are: the Liturgical Greeting (an invitation to praise), Introductory Remarks (a fervorino), the Opening Rite (choice includes a penitential rite, Gloria, Kyrie, a Litany, Asperges, and more), and the Opening Prayer (Collect, the one found in the Missal).
What if, once in a while, the congregation waiting for Mass to begin were to be greeted by the celebrant/ presider walking down the aisle (cope optional), sprinkling Holy Water while saying the beautiful prayer ("Sprinkle me with hyssop") that was part of the asperges ritual?
