Alert (əlûrt`), settlement, on Ellesmere Island, extreme N Nunavut Territory, Canada, on the Arctic Ocean. It is the most northerly permanent settlement in the world. The settlement has a radio and meteorological station and a landing strip operated jointly by Canada and the United States.

(1) A sound or message that indicates some predefined event has occurred or a selected operation is about to be performed. The terms "alert" and "alarm" are sometimes used synonymously; however, an alert is more of a warning in advance, whereas an alarm signals that the event or error has occurred. See alarm.

The lipid-lowering drug fluvastatin reduces the risk of premature cardiovascular death in renal transplant recipients, according to the results of the Assessment of Lescol in Renal Transplantation (ALERT) trial.
