Alert (əlûrt`), settlement, on Ellesmere Island, extreme N Nunavut Territory, Canada, on the Arctic Ocean. It is the most northerly permanent settlement in the world. The settlement has a radio and meteorological station and a landing strip operated jointly by Canada and the United States.
alert (1) A sound or message that indicates some predefined event has occurred or a selected operation is about to be performed. The terms "alert" and "alarm" are sometimes used synonymously; however, an alert is more of a warning in advance, whereas an alarm signals that the event or error has occurred. See alarm.(2) A document with urgent information about a threat or vulnerability such as CIAC Bulletins at http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHome.html. alert [ə′lərt] (ordnance) A state of readiness against impending danger or for going into action.
