Astemirov, Bagautdin
Born Oct. 17, 1898, in the village of Aksai; died Apr. 3, 1967, in Makhachkala. Soviet Kumyk poet. Participated in the establishment of the Soviet rule in Dagestan. Astemirov led the effort to unite the literary forces of the republic and was the first chairman of the Union of Writers of Dagestan. From 1933 to 1937 he was the people’s commissar of education in the Dagestan ASSR. In 1933 his collection of poems The Struggle was published; in 1934, his play The Offensive was published. He wrote critical essays. The collection Morning Star (1957) includes works written over a period of years. Astemirov was the author of a book of children’s riddles entitled Who Can Guess?
