Aston whole-number rule [′as·tən ‚hōl ′nəm·bər ‚rül]

(physics)

The rule which states that when expressed in atomic weight units, the atomic weights of isotopes are very nearly whole numbers, and the deviations found in samples of elements are due to the presence of several isotopes with different weights.
