The trial, called the Asymptomatic Carotid Atherosclerosis Study (ACAS), found that surgery to remove fatty deposits from one of the main arteries in the neck supplying blood to the brain lowered the five-year risk of stroke by about one-half.
First, the 22% randomization rate was comparable to or better than other randomized trials, such as the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial or Asymptomatic Carotid Atherosclerosis Study.
