Atarov, Nikolai Sergeevich 

Born Aug. 12 (25), 1907, in Vladikavkaz. Soviet Russian writer. Member of the CPSU since 1947.

Atarov’s works were first published in 1930 in the journals Nashi dostizheniia (Our Achievements), Krasnaia nov’ (Red Virgin Soil), and others. In his novellas Atarov examines the moral foundations of life and the character of contemporary man. Atarov’s works include the novellas The Director of Small Rivers (1936) and A Short Summer in the Mountains (1965) and the stories “The Calendar of Russian Nature,” “Araukariia,” and “Warbling Music.” The life and exploits of the people during the war are examined in the stories “The Hut,” “Scales and the Sled,” “The Alarm Bell,” and “Santa-Lucia,” and in the novella “Death Under a Pseudonym” (1957). In 1954, “Story About First Love” was published. Atarov’s publicistic works and the book / Don’t Want to Be Small (1967) are devoted to the theme of the emotional upbringing of youth and to the affirmation of personal dignity.
