Atbara River

Atbara River

River, North Africa. Rising in the Ethiopian highlands, it flows about 500 mi (800 km) northwest through eastern Sudan to join the Nile River at Atbara in The Sudan. It is the Nile's northernmost tributary.

The refugees were part of a larger group that tried at 01:30 local time to cross the Atbara River -- which is near the Shagarab refugee camp in eastern Sudan -- in four boats.
They were part of a larger group of four boats crossing the Atbara river at night to evade police checkpoints in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
