Location: 20 minutes west of Baton Rouge. Facilities: Visitor contact station, hiking trails. Activities: Fishing, hiking, wildlife watching, hunting, photography, educational programs. Special Features: The 595,000-acre Atchafalaya River Basin is the nation's largest complex of forested wetlands and supports the nation's largest concentration of American woodcock. Refuge is located adjacent to the Louisiana's Sherburne Wildlife Management Area, which offers camping areas and boat launch facilities. Habitats: 15,222 acres of bottomland hardwood swamp, lakes, and bayous. Access: Open year round during daylight hours. Wild life: American bald eagle, Louisiana black bear; also white-tailed deer, fox, and coyote, swallow-tailed kite, eastern wild turkey. See other parks in Louisiana.
