Auchmuty, Sir Samuel (ôkmy`tē, ôk`–, ä`mətē), b. 1758 (not, as commonly stated, 1756) in New York City, d. 1822, British general. A Loyalist soldier in the American Revolution, he went to England at the end of the war. Successful service in India (1783–97) and in Egypt (1801–3) brought him popularity and a knighthood (1803).  in the unsuccessful attack (1807) on Buenos Aires. He became (1810) commander in chief at Madras (now Chennai) and captured (1811) Java from the Dutch. In 1821 he was appointed commander in chief in Ireland.
