Auchmuty, Sir Samuel (ôkmy `tē, ôk`–, ä`mətē), b. 1758 (not, as commonly stated, 1756) in New York City, d. 1822, British general. A Loyalist soldier in the American Revolution, he went to England at the end of the war. Successful service in India (1783–97) and in Egypt (1801–3) brought him popularity and a knighthood (1803).
