Crelle, August Leopold
Born Mar. 11, 1780, in Eichwerder, near the city of Wriezen; died Oct. 6, 1855, in Berlin. German mathematician and engineer. Member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences (1827). In 1826, Crelle founded the Journal fur die reine und angewandte Mathematik (Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics), also known as Crelle’s Journal, which played a major role in the development of mathematics.
