On central east coast of GA; original county; organized Feb 5, 1777 (prior to statehood) from Saint Paul Parish. Name Origin: For Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond (1672-1723).

Area (sq mi): 328.45 (land 324.04; water 4.41). Pop per sq mi: 604.20.
Pop 2005: 195,769. State rank: 7. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.00%; 1990-2000 5.30%. Pop 2000: 199,775 (White 44.40%; Black or African American 49.80%; Hispanic or Latino 2.80%; Asian 1.50%; Other 3.20%). Foreign born: 3.40%. Median age: 32.30.
