aulosSingle- or double-reed pipe usually played in pairs, particularly in ancient Greece. During the Classical period the pipes were of equal length, each with three or four finger holes. The principal wind instrument of most ancient Middle Eastern peoples, it existed in Europe up to the early Middle Ages, often as a single pipe with more finger holes. Its quavering sound, described by Plato, was classically associated with the rites of Dionysus.Want to thank TFD for its existence? No references found | The myth recalls that Athena had invented the aulos, but the other deities had mocked how her cheeks bulged out when she played, thus she threw the musical instrument away, cursing whoever should pick it up. Despite his same-sex second birth, Dionysus was closely associated with women in myth and ritual, believed to have been raised by nymphs and always accompanied by the maenads, a group of frenzied female celebrants often depicted dancing wildly to the accompaniment of the aulos and tambourine. He also has performed with the Aspen Festival and Chamber Orchestra, the Naumburg Award-winning Aulos Wind Quintet and, as principal clarinetist, with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, the Las Vegas Symphony and the Reno Philharmonic. |
