Aurangabad

Aurangabad (ourŭng'gäbäd`), city (1991 pop. 572,709), Maharashtra state, W India. A district administrative center, it trades cotton, wool, and oil, and has an airport. The city has developed industrially since the 1970s and produces motor vehicles and vehicle parts, whiskey, pharmaceuticals, leather, rubber, and plastic products, and fiber-optic cables. Aurangabad, founded in 1610, is the home of Marathwada Univ. Nearby are the great mausoleum (1711) of Aurangzeb's empress and the ruins of his capital, Dalautabad. Historically Muslim, the city has become largely Hindu as it has industrialized.
