In eastern TX, west of Houston; original county; organized Mar 17, 1836 (prior to statehood) from Old Mexican Municipality. Name Origin: For Stephen Fuller Austin (1793-1836), MO territorial legislator (1814-20), AR jurist (1820), surveyor and explorer of TX (1822), and secretary of state of the Republic of TX (1836)
