In central AL, northwest of Montgomery; organized Nov 30, 1818 (prior to statehood) from Montgomery County. Name Origin: For Autauga Creek, probably from Creek Indian atigi 'border.'

Area (sq mi): 604.45 (land 595.97; water 8.48). Pop per sq mi: 81.60.
Pop 2005: 48,612. State rank: 27. Pop change: 2000-20005 11.30%; 1990-2000 27.60%. Pop 2000: 43,671 (White 79.70%; Black or African American 17.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.40%; Asian 0.50%; Other 1.70%). Foreign born: 1.20%. Median age: 35.10.
Income 2000: per capita $18,518; median household $42,013; Pop below poverty level: 10.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,018-$25,664.
