Ava, in the Bible

Ava (ā`və), in the Bible, an unidentified city of Mesopotamia, perhaps the same as Ivah. Its inhabitants are called Avites.

Ava, village, Myanmar

Ava (ä`və), village, central Myanmar, on the Ayeyarwady River, 10 mi (16 km) S of Mandalay. Founded in 1364, it was the capital of a dynasty of Burmese kings until 1783 (when it was replaced by Amarapura Amarapura (ŭ'məräp`rä), town (1981 est. pop.

) and again from 1823 to 1837. Only ruins remain of its former greatness.

Ava

Ruined city, Myanmar. The city, located on the Irrawaddy River southwest of Mandalay, was founded in the 14th century by the Shans, who made it their capital. It was destroyed in 1527, but again became the capital in 1634 under the Toungoo dynasty. When Alaungpaya founded the Konbaung dynasty in the 18th century, Ava served as its capital for a time, and even after the dynasty built Amarapura and Mandalay, its seat was often referred to as the “Court of Ava.”
