Avenches (äväNsh`), anc. Aventicum, town, Vaud canton, W Switzerland. During the 1st and 2d cent. A.D., Avenches flourished under the Romans as the chief town of Helvetia Helvetia , region of central Europe, occupying the plateau between the Alps and the Jura mts. The name is derived from the Roman term for its inhabitants, the predominantly Celtic Helvetii, who were defeated (58 B.C.) at Bibracte by Julius Caesar in the Gallic Wars.

Elsewhere, George Whitaker, the 16-year-old brother of William and nephew of John and Michael, won individual gold and helped Britain to team gold at Avenches, Switzerland in the Pony European Showjumping Championships, riding The Colour of Money.
Within 24 hours it was announced she would join the John Whitaker International Pony Team who will represent Great Britain at the 2008 Pony European Championships to be held in Avenches, Switzerland next week.
CROSS COUNTRY: American Deena Drossin (Agoura High graduate) lost her lead in the final 250 meters of the 5-mile race at the World Championships in Avenches, Switzerland, and finished second to Ethiopia's Werknesh Kidane.
