Averbakh, Mikhail Iosifovich 

Born May 17 (29), 1872; died July 29, 1944. Soviet ophthalmologist; became an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1939; an Honored Scientist.

Averbakh was graduated from the University of Moscow in 1895. His work is devoted to various optical refractions, traumas, and such problems as blindness, glaucoma, and trachoma. He developed and introduced a series of new eye operations. Averbakh was chairman of the departments of eye diseases of the Second Moscow Medical Institute, the Central Advanced Training Institute for Physicians, and the Gel’mgol’ts Central Ophthalmological Institute. He was one of the founders of the Society of Eye Doctors in Moscow and later became its president. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1943. The M. I. Averbakh Prize is given annually for the best scientific work in ophthalmology by the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.
