Averkiev, Dmitrii Vasil’evich
Born Sept. 30 (Oct. 12), 1836, in Ekaterinodar; died Jan. 7 (20), 1905, in St. Petersburg. Russian writer; of a merchant family. Averkiev was graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1859. His plays, idealizing Russia’s past, are melodramatic. A Comedy About the Russian Nobleman Frol Skobeev . . . (1869) and The Old Days in Kashira (1872) were popular. In 1885–86, Averkiev published a monthly Diary of a Writer, which contained his stories, commentaries, and critical articles. WORKSDramy, vols. 1–3, 2nd ed.
