On the northwestern border of NC, northeast of Asheville; organized Feb 23, 1911 from Mitchell, Caldwell, and Watauga counties. Name Origin: For Col. Waightstill Avery (1745-1821), Revolutionary War officer, NC legislator, and attorney general (1777-79)
