Avshalumov, Khizgil Davidovich 

Born Jan. 16, 1913, in the village of Niugdy, inDerbent Raion. Soviet Tat writer. Member of the CPSU since 1940.

Avshalumov writes in Tat and in Russian. He took part in the Great Patriotic War. Until 1965 he was a journalist. In 1939 he published his first novella, Lovers.

Avshalumov gained recognition through his collections of short stories and essays— Friendship (1956), Meeting at the Spring (1960), How I Revived (1961, in Russian), and The Bride With a Surprise (1966, in Russian). His novellas include Sosun’s Fate (1957; Russian translation, 1960, under the title Under the Plane Trees), The Sash of Poverty (1963), and Interpreter of the Imam (1967, in Russian). He also wrote the play Love in Danger.

Avshalumov is one of the first compilers of Tat folklore; in 1940 he published the collection Tat Folklore. He has been awarded the Badge of Honor and medals.
