Ayer, Edward Everett (1841–1927) book collector; born in Kenosha, Wis. A prosperous railway lumberman, he amassed a book collection rich in materials on American Indians, which he donated in 1911 to Chicago's Newberry Library. He helped found the Field Museum of Natural History and was its first president (1893–98).
