| Reformers have been so unpopular that they have allied themselves with authoritarian (some bloodsoaked) regimes, like that of Ataturk Mustafa Kemal Pasha in Turkey, Reza Shah in Iran, Bashir al-Asad in Syria, Saddam Hussein in Iraq and both Pervez Musharraf and Ayub Khan in Pakistan. Should it in fact come to pass, it would be a case of history repeating itself, the original player being Field Marshall Ayub Khan.
