Béchar (bāshär`), formerly Colomb-Béchar (kôlôN`–), town (1998 pop. 131,010), capital of Béchar prov., W Algeria. It is an important administrative center in a mining (coal, copper, magnesium, iron) and industrial region. Béchar also serves as a major shipping point for coal. It is noted for its jewelry and leatherwork. The town was established in 1905 as a French military post to control the then-turbulent Algerian-Moroccan border.
Béchar (formerly Colomb-Béchar), a city in western Algeria; administrative center of the wilaya of Saoura. Population, about 30,000 (1965). Béchar is a rail and highway junction, and it has an airport. It is the center of a mining region. The coal fields of Kenadsa and Abadía (where almost 16,000 tons was mined in 1969), the magnesium mine of Guettara, and the iron mine of Ogarta are nearby. There is a thermal-electric power station.
