Mandeb, Strait of

 or Bab el-Mandeb Arabic Bab al-Mandab

Strait that connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Its land boundaries are the Arabian Peninsula (northeast) and the African coast (southeast), which are separated by some 20 mi (32 km). The strait is divided into two channels by Perim Island. Its name means “Gate of Tears,” referring to the dangers that formerly attended its navigation.

Bab al-Mandab is a strategic area off the far southern coast of Yemen between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Washington set up a counterterrorism base across the Bab al-Mandab strait in Djibouti and in November 2002 carried out a Predator drone strike against six suspected Al-Qaeda militants east of the Yemeni capital.
The International Maritime Bureau has reported a handful of attempted pirate attacks, none successful, at the southern end of the Red Sea this year, mostly in the strategically important Bab Al-Mandab strait linking to the Gulf of Aden.
